Artist signature of Clifford Fragua (1955- ) Jemez Pueblo, WalatowaThis exquisite carved alabaster sculpture by Cliff Fragua is a masterful work, intricately carved on both sides. It features an inset motif of clouds and mesa, a rarity in Fragua's extensive oeuvre due to the complexity involved in carving a space in the middle of the piece. This motif is mirrored on the back, creating a cohesive and harmonious design. The figure's hair cascades down the entire back of the sculpture, adding to its elegance and fluidity. The piece is beautifully polished, showcasing Fragua's exceptional skill and attention to detail.

Clifford Fragua, a distinguished sculptor from the Jemez Pueblo, is the son of Manuel and Juanita Fragua and the brother of Glendora Fragua Daubs and Barbara Jean Chavez Fragua. He is the father of Tablita Fragua Stardancer Swope and Northbear Fragua. Clifford learned the art of pottery making from his mother, Juanita Fragua.

Fragua is nationally recognized as a major sculptor. He was chosen by the State of New Mexico to create a larger-than-life marble statue of the Indian warrior Popé. This commission was for New Mexico's permanent display of a notable New Mexican in the National Statuary Hall in Washington, DC. The National Statuary Hall, established in 1864, houses two statues from each state in bronze or marble for permanent display.
